The stories of Avercamp

The first thirty miniature scenes are themed around Avercamp.

Hendrick Avercamp (1585–1634) was unable to speak; for this reason, historical documents refer to him as "The Mute of Kampen" (*De Stomme van Kampen*). It is possible that he also had difficulty hearing, though this remains uncertain. What is certain, however, is that he possessed an exceptional eye for detail. He captured everything he observed in his drawings and paintings.

His world-renowned winter scenes—featuring ice skaters, children at play, and people out on the ice—are filled with humor, everyday narratives, and remarkable details. They offer a unique glimpse into daily life during the 17th century.

Hendrick’s nephew, Barent Avercamp, also painted winter landscapes. His work bears a strong resemblance to that of Hendrick, who was likely his teacher. Barent also lived and worked in Kampen.

These small stories and distinctive details from the works of the Avercamps served as the inspiration for *Kleintje Kampen* ("Little Kampen"). Throughout the historic city center, they come to life in 30 individual miniature scenes, each measuring approximately 3 centimeters in size.
